Block malware, hackers, phishing scams, network attacks and more with this versatile security suite
Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 is a comprehensive suite which will protect you from a host of security threats, both online and local.
A strong antivirus engine does a good job of detecting and removing malware, for instance, even brand new threats which it's never seen before. Independent testing labs AV Comparatives awarded the 2011 engine their highest "Advanced +" rating, and with this version adding greatly improved cloud protection, enhanced anti-rootkit technology and more, it can only get better.
The suite includes multiple levels of real-time protection. All files are scanned as you access or download them; websites are checked for malware or phishing scams; an instant messaging module works with all the main clients (ICQ, MSN, AIM, Yahoo!, Jabber, Google Talk, Mail.RU Agent, IRC); an improved spam filter keeps your inbox free of junk (well, mostly), and the Network Attack Blocker looks out for and blocks suspicious network activity.
Of course you also get all the components you'd expect in a modern security suite. So there's a smart firewall, which does a good job of deciding which programs can go on-line, without having to hassle you with endless pop-ups. There's also a capable set of parental controls; a virtual keyboard to help you bypass key loggers; and a "Safe Run" option which allows you to run programs in a sandbox, a virtualised, isolated environment which limits the damage malicious software can cause to your system.
And Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 also includes many extras which you might not find everywhere else.
An Applications Activity window, for instance, shows you which programs are consuming your RAM and CPU time at the moment, while also reporting on their reputation and popularity amongst other Kaspersky users, very useful for alerting you to new infections.
A smart Anti-Banner function speeds up your web browsing by intelligently blocking ads and banners.
And the System Watcher module tracks what programs do on your PC, so if malware does manage to carry out some unwanted actions on your PC then you may be able to reverse them, repairing any damage.
There's plenty of power, then, but a straightforward interface means Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 is very easy to use, especially if you install the desktop gadget. As well as displaying your security status, this also includes four buttons, each of which can be customised to run your preferred program module. It's all very flexible, and ensures all your favourite functions are generally no more than a couple of clicks away.
